Paula Makabory was born in Manokwari the year after the “Act of Free Choice”. In 1997 she graduated with a English major from Cenderawasih University. During her studies, Paula Makabory was involved with and interested in human rights and women’s rights. After graduating she was offered a job with Human Rights Defender organisation ELSHAM.
She moved to Timika, near the Freeport McMoran mine. In Timika, she documented human rights violations, working closely with women victims of domestic abuse.
In 2005, Palau Makabory was one of 1000 women nominated for the nobel peace prize. She now works for the Australian based Institute for Papuan Advocacy and Human Rights.
