Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) is the current President of Indonesia. Elected in 2004, SBY was only the second president directly chosen by Indonesians. SBY was re-elected in 2009, winning in a landslide, and became the first Indonesian president ever re-elected.
SBY was born into a well-to-do family of aristocratic background. Following in the footsteps of his father he entered the army after graduating from the Indonesian Military Academy in 1973. SBY served as a general under Suharto’s regime and was widely seen as having the traits and professional skills necessary to restore prosperity and stability to the country. When SBY entered office he promised to accelerate economic growth, crack down on corruption and terrorism and strengthen democracy and human rights.
